I can’t remember a time that I did not love to listen to music or sing. From a young age I was always exposed to all types of music.

I can still remember the feeling I got the first time I heard The Nylons with my dad, I wanted to be them, I wanted to do what they did! From there I developed a love for Canadian music, from Gordon Lightfoot to Bif Naked, from Holly McNarland to Loreena McKennitt, I love the music that Canada produces!

The first time I sang karaoke was actually in high school. We had some sort of event which was featuring Karaoke, however that was not the time that I was hooked.

That came years later when I went out with some collegues who convinced me to get up and sing. It was Cover Girl by NKOTB, and I busted out all the stops, singing, dancing…it was magical! And the response from the audience had me wanting more! I then moved out to Vernon, BC where there was surprisingly a large karaoke community.

They were a wonderful bunch that pushed me and supported me and raised me to a level that I did not expect. Upon returning to Ottawa, I had a friend who told me about karaoke at a bar that he went to sometimes, and so one fateful Wednesday night he brought me to Swizzles for my first ever Dog & Pony show, and I was hooked!

Partially because Swizzles is amazing, but the Karaoke reminded me of what I had in Vernon. It was a community that supported each other, everyone new everyone, and they had nicknames!!! (I was part of the Montana family in BC, my name was Idaho) I was able to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones, and introduce existing ones to the awesomeness that I was experiencing.

I am proud to call these people family. My motto is if you have a song in your heart then sing it, and sing it loud for the world to hear! If you are not ready to get up to the mic that is okay, just know that it is there if you ever are. Karaoke lets you get away from your day to day, while healing the soul. I look forward to seeing you out and about on the scene!
